The governor of Smolensk says no one survived. He's quoted as saying "the aircraft clipped the tops of the trees, crashed down and broke into pieces." Preliminary analysis of communications with the Polish state Tupolev Tu-154M which crashed at Smolensk has not indicated technical problems with the aircraft. Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin, chairing a technical meeting to update progress on the inquiry into yesterday's accident, heard evidence from Alexander Bastrykin, the investigative committee chief of Russia's federal prosecutor's office. During the meeting Putin inquired about communications between flight controllers and the aircraft crew. Bastrykin says that, while the information will be examined in greater detail in Moscow, the record "confirms no problem with the aircraft". There are three main points that are troubling concerning the plane crash: 1. Pilot refused and ignored command to land in route at the capital of Belarus. 2. Airport at of the crash at Smolensk was a military airport not in constant for 30 years and lacked any support to aid in landing. 3. The plane was a TP154 which had a history of accidents dating back to 1975. It is also questionable whether the plane had proper navigational equipment for the conditions.
